About Stryckers Bay

In 1959, founding president Father Henry (Harry) Browne established SBNC to unite residents of the Upper West Side in a common effort to ensure that their community would remain ethnically, racially, and economically diverse. As the West Side Urban Renewal Area’s (West 87th Street to West 97th Street – Amsterdam Avenue to Central Park West) Project Area Committee, Strycker’s Bay assisted hundreds of families to relocate into decent affordable housing within the WSURA and to cope with the threat of displacement, poor housing conditions and inadequate community services. SBNC organized committees to advocate for the rights of urban renewal residents threatened with displacement, to fight for the 2,500 low-income housing unit commitment made to the community and to ensure that the urban renewal plan would serve all the people of the community.
