EARLY ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY PROJECT
Witnessing the need of elementary school students not reading at grade level, SBNC has planted the seeds for the development of a program that will help students and their families access resources and obtain the academic support they need to succeed in school.
Now in the planning and pilot stages is a project that will help Strycker’s Bay’s youth program LACASA, address the academic support needs of elementary school children that are not reading at grade level. An additional component for parents seeking assistance navigating the public school system is also being developed.
Heading this project are Nora Abbis, an Intern from Barnard and Christian Martinez an Americorp Service Member from The After School Corporation. The vision for the project is to offer tools and resources to students and their parents as an early education intervention that will insure academic improvement and long-term school success.
Stay tuned...the project will need plenty of volunteers to work individually with students...if you are interested in becoming a volunteer please reach out to Christian Martinez or Nora Abbis.
Until the next post...
Kelley
